Diesel Multiple Units

Railcars or Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) were introduced in the mid-1950s as part of the 1955 British Railways modernisation plan. The first generation units ("heritage DMUs") were built through to the early 1960s and some units lasted in service on the mainline to 2003. Around 300 vehicles survive in preservation today, and a few in departmental use.

Second generation units consist of all railcars built after the 1st generation DMUs. These start with railbuses of the mid-1980s through Sprinters and modern Turbo, Voyager and Desiro types.
